PROMERT — Agrupamento de Produtores de Bovinos Mertolengos S.A., with 204 Shareholders, was established in 2006, as an association of Mertolengo breeders with 103 shareholders, most of whom are also members of ACBM (Associação de Criadores de Bovinos Mertolengos (the Mertolengo breeders’ association), created in 1987 and which manages the breed’s genealogical book since 1992 and has been carrying out a program of animal improvement since 1994.
In 2018, ACBM has 17,500 cows in their records). Besides having the register of all the Mertolengo animals’ pedigree since 1978. Promert S.A. is responsible for commercializing “Carne Mertolenga, D.O.P.” (Mertolenga Meat, PDO).
ACBM, PROMERT S.A., and CERTIS control the whole process “from the pasture to the plate” and they guarantee total product traceability. As a commercial Company Promert S.A., commercialize the Carne Mertolenga DOP in the main channels, Food Retailers, Hotels (Sheraton, Four Seasons, Marriott, Manor Group, and Portuguese 4 Stares Companies) Restaurant’s, the majory in Central Porto, Algarve and Lisbon which include James Oliver Lisbon.
ACBM/Promert S.A has 154.14 hectares. in 3 different farms. The main one “Currais e Simalhas” host the Mertolengo Breed Genetic Unit. There several genetic tests are done to improve the genetic performance of the Breed. The other two units are used to grow grass fed animals (until 15 months, 180kg carcass weight). ACBM has a team of animal production technicians that provide nutritional, sanitary, reproductive and welfare support to all ACBM members and Promert S.A. shareholders. Promert S.A. owns a Meat Shop at our headquarters in Évora. The Meat Shop works also has the show room for all Carne Mertolenga DOP new products.
Promert will work with FMV to facilitate the establishment of a national beef network in Portugal through its activities in WP4-6 where it will help to identify Portuguese beef farmers’ priority needs, identify good practices in Portugal, and facilitate knowledge exchange between farmers and academic experts in Portugal and between Portuguese and other European farmers trans-nationally. It will also use its dissemination channels to ensure effective dissemination of research results to end-users and to communicate about the project at national and EU level to a range of stakeholders including farmers, industry and policy makers (WP7). It will be involved in WP2 (providing insights as a producer association and also availing of training) to ensure an effective multi-actor approach within BovINE.
Humberto José Guerreiro Rocha D.V.M. Lisbon University 1986. At present CEO at Humberto Rocha & Consultores Associados Lda.. Professor of Food Safety and Technology. Senior Consultant at Promert-Agrupamento de Produtores de Bovinos Mertolengos. S.A. Was Technical Manager, Operations Manager and Site Director in many Meat Industries in Portugal and Uruguay with medium-term periods in UK and Brasil. Has large experience in New Products Development and Design. Has a wide experience dealing with Producer Associations (Producers Clubs) in the UK, Brazil, Uruguay and Portugal. Worked also as Quality Manager at SONAE Comercio e Serviços S.A. biggest Portuguese Retailer.
José Pais, zootechnical engineer from Évora University, has been working with mertolenga cattle bredeer’s association (ACBM – Associação de Criadores de Bovinos Mertolengos / www.mertolenga.com) in Portugal since 1994. Jose holds a postgraduate study degree in “Mediterranian Agricultural Systems”, and is responsible for the mertolenga breed plan execution and herd book management.
Carolina Maio graduated in Animal Science and Technology from the University of Évora. Beef producer, who has promoted my propensity for this area since my childhood. I did some internships in the bovine sector, which gave rise to knowledge about the management and nutritional in a feed factory. I’ve been working at Promert for 4 years, a reality of constant contact with producers.
Luís Januário graduated in Animal Science and Technology from the University of Évora. Course of Agricultural Machine Operators. Master: Attend the Zootechnical Engineering – University of Évora (2017); Did several internships in order to consolidate the theoretical knowledge acquired in the classes, which are mainly focused in the area of Bovine production, since it is the area that gives me the most interest. On my own initiative I have always shown an interest in obtaining both theoretical and practical knowledge regarding both animal production and plant production, and also worked in Adegas and Alentejana Wines. In December 2017 I started my career at Promert S-A, where I am until today.
