BovINE partners visit family farms in Wachtberg, Germany

BovINE partners and their invited beef farmers and actors had the unique opportunity to visit two family-run beef cattle farms whilst visiting Germany for the 3rd Annual General Assembly. BovINE partner, BRS, organised the day of farm visits to give those in attendance an insight into cattle farming in the Wachtberg region of Germany.

The two farms visited by BovINE partners and their invited beef farmers and actors were the Walterscheid farm and the Gelausen farm.

Arriving first at the Walterscheid farm, partners were greeted by the whole family and invited to ask questions about farming practices in Germany and specifically on their farm. Partners were interested to learn that the vast majority of beef cattle farmers in Germany are ‘part-time’ with farms being family-run, this means that as well as rearing cattle for beef production most farmers also have another ‘day job’ to supplement their income.

Following the question and answer session, partners were led to visit two grazing fields to see herds of Limousin cattle.

The second farm visited was the Gelausen farm. This family-run farm raises Glan cattle, a local rare breed of cattle kept mainly in the Reinland-Pflalz region of Germany. In total, there are approximately 2000 animals of this breed in Germany. The Gelausen farm plays a significant part in ensuring the longevity of this breed.

At the Gelausen farm partners were given a tour of the grounds, which included a large horse stable and riding arena, and visited a small herd of Glan cattle grazing on a hill within walking distance. Following a lunch, partners were taken in a tractor-led wagon to visit a herd of Glan cattle residing in a nearby woodland area.

At each farm, BovINE GA organiser, Lena Lindau, interviewed the farmers – videos of the interviews in German can be seen below.
