A Thematic Network is a particular format of multi-actor project promoted by EIP-AGRI and funded by European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme to work on a specific theme. Its principal aim is to bring people/actors from science and practice together to co-create readily implementable, useful and practical outputs. There are multiple thematic network projects currently underway across Europe, dealing with diverse themes across multiple sectors in agriculture, with the aim of improving the resilience and overall sustainability of the sector.
The BovINE project has been engaged with several newly established thematic networks funded under the Horizon 2020 programme to both share their experiences of establishing a thematic network and to learn from others. In February 2021, BovINE’s project manager, Richard Lynch, presented BovINE’s multi-actor approach to collecting grass root needs and sharing of practice ready solutions, to attendees of the Kick-Off meeting of the thematic network project, Resilience-4-Dairy. Representatives from BovINE also participated in networking sessions to define priority actions during a General Assembly meeting of the EU funded EuroSHEEP project.
More recently, representatives from BovINE participated in a livestock cluster meeting organised by the European Commission’s Research Executive Agency (REA). This meeting, held on the 15th September 2021, aimed to present new projects and offer networking opportunities, to convey information on the policy context and EC expectations of the projects, and to foster cooperation, synergies, policy feedback and exploitation of results.
At the event, several large thematic projects were presented, including the PATHWAYS project, which focuses on developing sustainable food systems to support Europe’s Farm-to-Fork strategy and the INTAQT project, which focuses on innovative tools for assessment and authentication of meat and dairy products’ qualities.
Opportunities for collaboration with BovINE were identified and are currently being pursued such as:
