On the 27th of November 2020, the BovINE project joined the European Researchers’ Night, an annual event with the objective of bringing researchers closer to citizens, so people can gain a better understanding of what researchers do and how it impacts their daily lives. These events are designed to be stimulating and capture the interest for a scientific career, especially among youth.
The University of Zaragoza (Unizar), part of the S-TEAM project which is comprised of nine Spanish universities (Grupo 9 Universidades), developed a virtual event which they aimed to make as attractive as possible via an online platform since face-to-face activities were not possible due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The team created an online platform in the style of a recreation of the Paraninfo, the old faculty of Medicine and Science of Unizar. Users were able to navigate this virtual world to explore inside this emblematic building and discover engaging activities. This virtual platform is still available to visit (in Spanish) via the following link: https://ucc.unizar.es/noche-investigadores/programa-0
Whilst exploring the virtual recreation of the Paranifo, visitors were able to access the EU Corner (“Rincón Europeo”), an activity sections where eight European projects of the European Research Council and Marie Curie programs were presented. Virginia Resconi, the WP-5 leader from BovINE, gave a presentation of the BoVINE network, an H2020 project which has been created to help the European beef farming sector to face sustainability challenges. Virginias’ presentation can be seen in the video here.
Another activity found within the virtual building relating to European beef farming was a mini-documental “El viaje del filete” (the trip of the steak), which shows the journey of the steak from the farm to the plate to answer the question if it is safe to eat or not when is cooked on your plate. More activities included “within the eyes of science”, showing some images such as a cathedral, the red wine, a cured ham, or the river Ebro with a public or a researcher’s eye, and analyzed under the researcher perspective.
